Characterisation and disposability assessment of multi-waste stream in-container vitrified products for higher activity radioactive waste

چکیده

Materials from GeoMelt® In-Container Vitrification (ICV)™ of simulant UK nuclear wastes were characterised to understand the partitioning elements, including inactive surrogates for radionuclide species interest, within heterogeneous products. Aqueous durability analysis was performed assess potential disposability resulting wasteforms. The vitrification trial aimed immobilise a variety legacy waste streams representative decommissioning operations in UK, plutonium contaminated material, Magnox sludges and ion-exchange materials, which vitrified upon addition glass forming additives. Two trials with different characterised, resultant vitreous wasteforms comprising olivine pyroxene crystalline minerals glassy matrices. Plutonium surrogate elements immobilised fraction rather than into phases. All products exhibited comparable or improved existing high level over 28 day period.

Disposal of Radioactive Waste

Perhaps the most important single problem arising from the increasing use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes is how to dispose of the growing amounts of radioactive waste. Many of its complex aspects were discussed at the scientific conference on the disposal of radioactive waste held by IAEA in Monaco from 16 to 21 November 1959. The conference was organized jointly with UNESCO, with the c...

Safety Indicators for the Safety Assessment of Radioactive Waste Disposal

FOREWORD Plans for disposing of radioactive waste have raised a number of unique and mostly philosophical problems, mainly due to the very long timescales which have to be considered. While there is general agreement on disposal concepts and on the approach to establishing that disposal facilities are safe, consensus on a number of issues remains to be achieved. To assist in promoting discussio...

Radioactive Waste Assay for Reclassification

Following the ban on deep sea disposal of radioactive wastes in 1983 the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in the United Kingdom (UK) has stored plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U) contaminated wastes on site in 200 l steel drums or as wrapped packages containing filters or other materials. This was because of difficulty in demonstrating compliance with the with the 100 Bq/g Pu alpha activity limit...
